MacGurus Burly
Port Multiplier Enclosures
Up to
12 TeraBytes in
One Enclosure!
Connect up to 5 SATA drives to your computer with one eSATA cable! MacGurus
Burly
Port
Multiplier
Enclosures in
4,
5 and 8 Bay configurations are made to attach to port multiplier capable
PCI, PCI-X and PCI-Express (PCIe) host cards. Containing one port multiplier
board
(4
or
5
bays
enclosure) or
two port
multipliers (8 bay enclosure and Rack Mount enclosure). Great performance and
HUGE capacities are yours. Capable of being formatted into individual (JBOD)
mounted
drives or
in
RAID arrays using
utilities like
OSX Disk Utility, SoftRAID or Windows XP RAID utilities, you can realize up
to 300 MB/sec transfer rates and unparalleled versatility. See our Guide
to Port
Multipliers. Also read more at the SATA-IO.org Port Multiplier pages.
This is the finest built enclosure you can get to
store your data! MacGurus Burly Enclosures use the most robust power supply
(300
WATT) on
the market, great
cooling
with huge incredibly quiet 80 mm fans. All steel construction, you can literally
stand on them. No wimpy little box with the drives stacked
one on top of the other and no airspace between them. These contain full size
Hotswap Bays with solid aluminum trays protecting your drives and fully enclosing
them even when removed from the enclosure.
Every
tray
has
its own internal
fan
for the
absolute
best cooling
you can get. All these features are aimed at giving the highest
stability in temperatures and power supplied. That is the #1 priority of a drive
enclosure.
Is
your
data
worth
the
best
protection
possible?
Attaching the enclosure to your computer couldn’t be easier.
With an eSATA connector on the back for each port multiplier - you connect the
optional
1
or
2
meter
long eSATA cable between PCI host card and enclosure.
Enclosures come fully assembled either ready to install your choice of hard
drives
or already assembled and tested with Seagate SATA Hard Drives for industry leading
performance at bargain prices.
All components are SATAII capable and meet all SATA-IO.org specifications.

- Spare Drive Trays available at bottom of page
Note: LCD trays will not work in standard bays. The reverse does work, standard trays work
perfectly in LCD bays. So if you have an LCD equipped enclosure you can purchase additional
LCD or standard trays. If you have a standard tray equipped enclosure you can only use
standard trays.
Tray
Options:
Hotswap Drive Bays come in either Standard
LED Trays with status lights, LCD Display version
- and now a high end Trayless
System with LED activity and power lights. Tray systems fully surround
and protect the drives when out of the enclosure. Perfect for stacking archived
drives on
a shelf and extra trays are available
at the bottom of this page.
Standard Trays are simple and
low key. Personally I like these no frills trays. Each tray has built in drive
power and drive activity lights
you know which drives are working.
LCD Display Trays for those how want some direct monitoring of drive
status.
The LCD
display
is
pictured
at
right. Shows activity, drive temp and fan operation. Also has audible overtemp
and fan
failure
alarms.
Note: LCD trays will not insert into standard bays. The reverse
does work, standard trays work perfectly in LCD bays. So if you have an LCD
equipped
enclosure you can purchase additional LCD or Standard trays. If you have a standard
tray equipped enclosure you can only use standard trays.
Trayless Hotswap Drive System! Very high quality
trayless system that slips
drives in and out seamlessly. Took us a while to find a trayless system that
passed our testing with most of the ones we have seen not nearly robust enough.
This
one
is, solid construction and detail.
Perfect
for
those
wanting the
fastest
drive
swaps
possible
with least amount of screwdriver time (basically none since you open the door,
push the drive in and then close the door). The one downside to trayless systems
is when you pull a drive you are handling a bare drive. You will need antistatic
bags or other protected storage for drives when they are out of the enclosure.

A word about OEM versus Retail Drives -
MacGurus' strongly recommends that our customers avoid purchasing drives
marketed as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) hard drives. We suggest
that you only purchase and use Retail drives. Retail
drives carry the retail manufacturer's warranty, 3 to 5 years, with all
the contractual support that the warranty provides. OEM drives were
originally manufactured under contract for one of the many major manufacturers
of computers and or servers. OEM drives often do not carry a warranty from
the drive
manufacturer nor from
the
OEM buyer.
Instead they are sold
to resellers 'as is' and any warranty is provided by the reseller. Worse
yet, these drives may have custom firmware as specified by the OEM. We frequently
see customers with OEM market drives have compatibility problems in desktop
usage. There is just no way to know what you are getting when you purchase
OEM drives and warranty coverage is hit or miss depending on the source.
The total randomness in behavior makes it very difficult to diagnose and
maintain your storage array. Data transfer problems, mounting failures and
total drive failures are common
when OEM
drives are used. MacGurus ONLY sells Retail drives.
