Basic Install Guideline:

Backup your current system and home folders, data, updaters, installers to another drive (preferably one that will be off-line also).
Apple Restore, CCC or any program that is OS X compliant will work.
Make sure it boots correctly and the worked.
Reformat the original boot volume, (Zero-All is prefered).
This will map out back blocks.
Disk Utility 10.3.9 is the only pre-Tiger version that can work on Tiger system, so might want to use Tiger or 10.3.9.
Install Tiger, using the erase and install option.
But not HFS(X) (case-sensitive format)
Customize what you want installed, excluding drivers and languages you don't need.
Use the migration feature, select the old partition you backed up, and transfer all your users and files.
Apple does this perfectly, far better than anyone who tries to do it manually could.
Use the utilities on the DVD. (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301170)Network Utility

This utility lets you diagnose your Ethernet network connection while started from the Install disc. It works with your computer's built-in Ethernet port, and requires a connection to a DHCP server. Most broadband networks and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use DHCP. This means that Network Utility doesn't check AirPort or other non-Ethernet types of network connections.Installing Tiger - You can install Tiger from a hard drive using Restore to copy the DVD to a partition. You can also just copy the "Mac OS X Install DVD" files to a folder and run the full install from your booted hard drive.

When build 8A428 was declared to be Tiger's Gold Master build to be released to manufacturing, the web saw many complaints from testers saying issues they spotted in build 8A425 released not long ago remained unsolved in 8A428. Many thought Apple was racing to bring out this new technology as soon as possible...

I think Apple wanted to spend longer and defer those to 10.4.1, as they had G5s being built that had to have Tiger pre-installed, perhaps? Same story we saw in Oct. 2003 when Panther was released at the same time as the G5s were shipping (10.2.7 wasn't really suited to the G5).

Sonnet ATA controller drivers. MacFixIt reader Rick Prescott reports that Sonnet's PCI-based ATA/100 controller card is not properly functional under Mac OS X 10.4. "The ATA 100 Sonnet controller is broken in Tiger. Their response is that they are 'waiting for the GM of Tiger...' to see what is happening. The ACard 100/133 controller works well. At least I can get to my other two drives now." Sonnet, the GM was available a month ago. You mean the shipping version? Yes, one of our friends has often said that Apple would make changes between GM and shipping (there were rumors that those 10.3.0 FW bugs were gone in the FC build, so why did they get included in the final shipping version?).

Steve Garceau of Sonnet Technologies adds: "Just wanted to pass along that the Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA 4+4 (4 internal + 4 external) and eSATA 8 (8 external ports) Serial ATA host controller cards based on the exact same Marvell chip have been tested and are fully compatible with Tiger."

Chris Kaneko adds: "I have the Highpoint 1820A and an internal Raid 10 setup that I have been running in a dual 2.0GHz since last year. I had no problem upgrading to Tiger 10.4 and updating to 10.4.1. Be sure you have the drivers rr182x-mac-v102 installed."

Over two years ago, IBM demonstrated 40% boost from compiler update and changes. That is the stuff that matters (and that the code is clean of course!). Xcode 2.2 uses GCC 4, give developers time, like a year for 4.02 and time to learn how to use the new compiler.

What Spotlight could use (http://www.robservatory.com/archives/2005/05/12/shining-the-spotlight-on-spotlight/)
--------------------
Macosxhints - Search excluded directories (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=2005050222125145)

By default, Spotlight excludes many hidden, System, and developer directories from the metadata index.

It turns out the excluded directories are hardcoded into Spotlight's mds binary, located in /System: Library: Frameworks: CoreServices.framework: Versions: A: Frameworks: Metadata.framework: Versions: A: Support: mds. You can do a strings on the above binary to see them -- here's the full list of excluded directories. (http://www.macosxhints.com/dlfiles/spotlight_excludes.txt)

However, while looking in the .Spotlight-V100 directory at the root of the drive, I found a file called _rules.plist, which can be used to tweak the exclusions. This change has converted me over to using Property List Editor rather than BBEdit (which I had previously preferred for viewing + editing .plist files). You can extract just the Property List Editor using Pacifist, without installing any other parts of Xcode.
----------------
Disable Spotlight

first modify /etc/hostconfig to read:

SPOTLIGHT=-NO-

Then to get rid of the existing index, run these two commands from Terminal:

mdutil -i off /
mdutil -E /

The first command disables indexing on the boot volume, and the second erases the existing template. You can then use Activity Monitor to kill any mds or mdimport processes or else just reboot. Futzing with permissions will probably break OS updates that try to update files in the zeroed-out directories and of course won't survive a repair-permissions run.

If you later change your mind and decide you want Spotlight after all, it's easy to reactivate. Set

SPOTLIGHT=-YES-
in /etc/hostconfig, run in Terminal:
mdutil -i on /
and reboot.
-------------------
I was suffering from a never ending 70% CPU usage of the mds daemon and have found a solution. If a program creates a lot of temp files and then throws them in the trash before Spotlight has a chance to index them, it seems to send Spotlight into an endless loop. (I think Spotlight is looking for files that no longer exist and trying to index them).

What I did to solve the problem was add my "Downloads" folder to the "Privacy" tab in the Spotlight preferences. I also edited the "/.Spotlight-V100/_exclusions.plist" file from the command line to exclude my home directory .Trash folder because I couldn't add the trash folder any other way, but I doubt this is necessary.

~/.Trash

Apple Disk Utility Apple has a critical warning about the possibility of data loss using pre-Tiger utilities with the new operating system:

To avoid issues with a Mac OS X 10.4 volume, do not use disk utility software that was released before Tiger (late April, 2005) with it. If you do, the software might report false errors or attempt "repairs" that could lead to data loss.

Third-party disk utility software includes Alsoft DiskWarrior, Micromat Tech Tool, and Symantec Norton Disk Doctor. Consult third-party utility manufacturers to find out which software versions are compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.

You can use Disk Utility in Mac OS X 10.3.9 --and only version 10.3.9-- to check or repair a Mac OS X 10.4 volume. Don't use an earlier version of Disk Utility, such as when started from a Mac OS X 10.3 disc.

Mac OS X 10.4 adds support for Extended Attributes. A disk repair application that's not Mac OS X 10.4-aware may incorrectly report Extended Attributes as directory damage. You may get an error message such as "Cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged" that is untrue.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269

Actually, using Disk Utility 10.4.0 from the DVD may not be the best option. Apple doesn't explain clearly enough, but is explicit in using 10.4.2 or later Disk Utility, or, lacking that, use fsck from Single User Mode. Especially given that 10.4.2 introduced enhancements to Disk Utility's ability to repair drives,

Using Disk Utility and fsck (July 15, 2005)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214)

fsck reports benign errors when journaling is turned on (10.3)
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107250 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107250)

10.4.2 Disk Utility
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301170 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301170)

(August 4, 2005): Handling "overlapped extent allocation" errors reported by Disk Utility or fsck
If Disk Utility or the fsck command line utility reports "overlapped extent allocation" errors... If you don't have access to another Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later volume or Install disc ("version 10.4.2" or later appears on the disc's label), start up your computer in single-user mode and use fsck to repair the issues.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25770 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25770)

Disk Utility problems. Older versions of Disk Utility cannot verify or repair startup disks updated to Mac OS X 10.4.3 - including Disk Utility from 10.4.2.

As such, the solution is to either start from another volume that has the version of Disk Utility bundled with Mac OS X 10.4.3 installed, or simply startup in single-user mode by holding the "Command" and "S" keys during startup and using the fsck command as detailed in Knowledge Base article #106214.

Single User Mode - http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106388 (www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n106388)
About 3rd party disk utilities - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269 (docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269)

If you have a hard reboot or problems, I immediately turn to SUM and fsck along with Applejack (I've seen where clearing out caches and swap files that way can return a system to normal).

AppleJack (OS X repair/troubleshooting tool)
" AppleJack 1.4.1
* fixed deep cache cleaning under Tiger to respect the new cache file names for launch services and user icons.
* improved the disk repair routine messaging, and implemented a limit for how many times disk repair is repeated on an irreparably damaged disk in auto mode.
* expanded some of the preference file checking to include .xml file extensions as well as the old (deprecated, but still in use) /var/db/SystemConfiguration directory.
* removed 'SystemStarter start Disks' from the setup sequence of AppleJack for people running Tiger. Evidently, it's not necessary anymore.
Requirements: Mac OS X 10.2 or later, including 10.4."

Disk Warrior 3.03
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html#Tiger
Possible Problems: DiskWarrior) CD to 3.0.3 and it boots my Dual G5 1.8GHz fine, but it does not recognize the internal RAID formatted as Mac OS Extended containing a fresh Tiger install.

When I boot from the internal disk (I assume they are trying to say "RAID volume" rather than "disk"), DiskWarrior does find the disk but of course cannot fix it being the startup volume. Alsoft is aware of the problem.

Disk Warrior does *not* work with 10.4. I have been running ADC seeds for quite some time and had to call Alsoft about the issues I was having getting Disk Warrior to work with the partition that I had Tiger installed on, and tech support there confirmed that DW doesn't work with partitions that have Tiger installed on them.

"The new DiskWarrior 3.0.3 supports Tiger's new Access Control Lists (ACL) and extended file attributes. It has improved journaling support and enhanced RAID support, including the new concatenated RAID volumes.

If you quit the update process before burning is complete, /private/tmp/ folder has the image which you can mount and copy DW 3.03 or burn the image with Disk Utility.

Maybe a no-no? (see MacFixit Troubleshooting (http://www.macfixit.com/staticpages/index.php?page=2003111009264885) today)

Mac OS X Server 10.3 allows you to use the Case Sensitive/Journaled file system for data volumes. It is not intended for use on startup disks.

Ê If you format a volume as Case Sensitive/Journaled and try to install Mac OS X Server on it, the Installer will tell you that you can't install on the selected volume until settings are changed.

Ê When you need to use the Case Sensitive/Journaled file system, you should partition the server's hard disk (or use multiple hard disks). Put case sensitive items on a Case Sensitive/Journaled volume, and install Mac OS X Server on a volume that is not case sensitive.

Examples of reasons to use the Case Sensitive/Journaled file system are:

¥ When hosting (non-boot) data volumes containing case sensitive files
¥ As a higher performance alternative to UFS
¥ Situations where you need a file system that supports case sensitivity and journaling
¥ When you need to use case sensitive volumes larger than 1 TB (UFS supports volumes up to 1 TB ; HFS Plus supports volumes up to 16 TB)
¥ Situations where you have legacy UNIX applications and scripts that require or were only designed for case sensitive file systems

Dantz Retrospect

Dantz (now part of EMC) has posted a Retrospect Tiger compatibility statement:

During the first week of May EMC Dantz will provide free downloadable updates for Retrospect 6.0 for Macintosh customers that supports Apple's newly announced Mac OS X Tiger operating system. This new of versions of Retrospect, Retrospect Express, and Retrospect Client are REQUIRED for all customers who move to the new Mac OS X Tiger operating system. Prior releases of Retrospect must not be used on Mac OS X Tiger.

Ê A future release of Retrospect, which is currently being developed, will add support for two new file system-related features of Mac OS X Tiger: extended Metadata and Access Control Lists (ACLs). This release of Retrospect will also be free to all Retrospect 6.0 customers.

Update: Dantz released Retrospect 6.0.212, a free update that provides Tiger compatibility for the backup software.

Dantz notes that this version is required for Mac OS X 10.4 and that it can be used to backup 6.0.110 clients running Tiger.

Extended Metadata and Access Control Lists will be suported in a future free update.

The release notes add:

Mac OS X Tiger introduces support for a new file system feature called metadata. Metadata is used by Spotlight to enable fast searching for files based on user-defined tags on those files. Retrospect cannot back up or restore the Tiger specific metadata, though the contents of the files are backed up.

More than one person has had trouble with archive/install and Mail acting up. The only problem that I had doing the upgrade from Panther was with one of these "improved" applications. I did an "archive and install" upgrade, preserving my settings, but when I booted into Tiger and launched Mail, not only were my several years of organized messages not properly imported into the new version of Mail, the Mail application was sluggish and refused to quit when asked.

I was forced to trash the mail database and re-import my messages manually, from three different repositories, associated with different email accounts. Everything seems to be working well now, and it's probably a result of my convoluted setup with five years of archived mail that had been imported from Entourage a while back.

The new Mail version has a new look, and a bunch of new features, apparently, but none that I need or use.

A BugTraq posting yesterday warned about this Cocktail security vulnerability, which apparently affects other utilities, as well:

"Cocktail is a general purpose utility for Mac OS X. The application serves up a scrumptious mix of maintenance tools and interface tweaks, all accessible via a comprehensive graphical interface and toolset. It is a smooth and powerful utility that simplifies the use of advanced UNIX functions."

The problem: Since Cocktail needs administrative privileges the user is prompted for the admin password upon startup. The actual maintenance is done by command line utilities that are executed in an insecure manner: Cocktail creates a new process and lets /bin/sh pipe the admin password using echo into sudo, which then will execute the utility, like this:
sh -c echo 'PASSWORD' | sudo -p "" -S sudo update_prebinding -root /

Exploitation: Knowing Cocktail is waiting for some Unix utility to have finished its work, just execute "ps ax" on the terminal and search for the password.

The vendor has been contacted; the new version 3.6 for Mac OS X "Tiger" should have been fixed. I haven't tested this version, though.

The same vulnerability affects Carbon Copy Cloner:

The security problem found in Cocktail also affects Carbon Copy Cloner. I was amazed to see my password in plain-text when I did a ps after I got bored waiting for CCC to do its job.

A Bombich Software forum posting offers a workaround for a Tiger issue with Carbon Copy Cloner, part of a more general Tiger compatibility issue:

Pending a possible update from Mike Bombich, and thanks to a post by iRoss:

Apple has made a change to the authentication protocol preventing running CCC by simply double-clicking it. As a momentary workaround, run Carbon Copy Cloner from Terminal under sudo...

In Terminal type "sudo open " - no quotes and note the SPACE at the end
then drag CCC into the Terminal window - that will complete the line with the full path

hit Return and at the prompt enter your password - (typing does not show)
hit Return

Dan Frakes followed up with some more Carbon Copy Cloner tips:

If you're not a Terminal fan, you should also be able to use Pseudo to launch CCC directly as root. (Or check out SuperDuper, which has been getting great feedback.)

Cocoatech describes another class of Tiger compatibility problems involving a StuffIt framework:

One issue that we're tracking is that some Path Finder customers cannot get Path Finder to launch after migrating to a new computer or fresh install of Mac OS X. The reason for this problem is almost always because the Allume Stuffit framework is missing from the system.

Ê For some strange reason, Apple's Migration Tool (which is a super cool way of moving your old information over to a different computer or a fresh install of the operating system) does not copy over the Stuffit framework. Path Finder uses the Stuffit framework in order to provide compression and decompression of most file formats, so if it's missing when Path Finder launches, Path Finder goes "uh-oh" and crashes. To fix this issue, you have three options....

[We wonder if this could be the old Migration Tool issue with software that includes "kernel extensions." -MacInTouch]

David Barrett warns of another potential Tiger trap:

Yesterday I downloaded a copy of Tiger Cache Cleaner (TCC), by Northern Softworks, to try it. The software-update site I downloaded it from (MacUpdate) contained no hint of the problem this would cause, namely that once I had launched the TCC my registered copy of Panther Cache Cleaner (PCC) would cease to funtion, giving me the following message on attempted launch: "This application cannot run on this system. (1039)"

Ê TCC is a paid upgrade from previous versions and won't accept a registration code from an earlier version, which is (arguably, no doubt) fair enough. But the fact that it "kills" the preceding version (and quite possibly other earlier versions, though I have no way of knowing that) is not quite right, in my opinion.

Ê I am giving the developer the benefit of the doubt on this, and have contacted him by email asking if there's a solution. I suggest others with the problem do the same. The main thing, though, is that even if you want to try TCC on a pre-10.4 system, I recommend that you don't do it if you wish to keep using PCC, at least until someone has heard from the developer about this. MacIntouch is doing an excellent job of staying abreast of Tiger related issues.

Freezes during shutdown or startup

Disconnect external devices, check for problematic drivers

For instance, Apple's structural changes to the way that Mac OS X handles audio and audio-based applications (Core Audio) has rendered some devices in conflict normal system routines. Removing, or downgrading device drivers can sometimes resolve these issues.

The package of drivers m-audio revolution 1.4 for m-audio 7.1 revolution. With these installed, my Mac wouldn't restart or shutdown. Without them, or uninstalling them, the problems are completely solved (but I've no audio card anymore.) "Re-installing the old m-audio driver (1.2.9) allows normal system functioning (mac shutdowns and restarts) but surround sound is not working well, driver update absolutely needed.

Check for bad login/startup items

SCSI issues - dual 867 w/ 1.25GB RAM, super drive and an Apple SCSI Card. I did not have anything plugged in but the monitor and USB keyboard. I wondered if my SCSI card was the issue, so I took it out and had a great install of Tiger."

"I just updated to Tiger. I erased the drive and kept getting a 'Please Restart' error. I couldn't install Tiger. I then disconnected my USB printer and unlinked my SCSI chain from the computer. The install worked but after I attached my SCSI chain back to my computer, I would get the same 'Please Restart' message. It appears that Tiger does not like my SCSI peripherals. I now can't use my old scanner and Zip drive.

I got a CLP-500 printer a few weeks ago and also found that there was no driver listed on there web site. I called them direct and was told, because they consider the CLP-500 a Enet-workable printer, that they had taken off the USB driver.

I indicated that I was only using the printer as a USB and they emailed me the correct driver which I installed under Panther. When I got Tiger, I used the same printer driver install and it works perfectly fine with Tiger. Since it is not listed on the Samsung site, you will need to contact their support and have them email it. Hope this helps..

About Samsung CLP-500 printers' incompatibility with Tiger: he is totally correct. Even if the printer is networked, once Tiger is installed, the computer can no longer connect to the printer using the default protocol - Apple/ EtherTalk. However, if your printer IS a networkable version, there IS a workaround - follow these 10 simple steps:

In Print Center's Printer List, click the 'Add' button, to add a new printer

In the Printer Browser window that pops up, click the 'IP Printer' tab at the top of the window - this will allow you to connect to your printer using a TCP/IP- based protocol

In the 'Protocol' menu, select "Line Printer Daemon - LPD"

In the 'Address' field, enter the IP address of your Samsung printer - you can check your printer's IP address by printing its 'Configuration Page'.

Leave the "Queue" field blank

In the "Name" field, enter any name you'd like to use for your printer (Ex: "Samsung CLP-500")

Leave "Location" blank

In the "Print Using" menu, select "Samsung"

The window extends, and your printer model should appear inside a selectable list. Select it.

Click the 'Add' button, to add the printer to your Printer List! Done! Works like a charm, and your computer should be able to print to it again

Make sure your printer's IP address is STATIC, and not being set by a DHCP or BOOTP server - otherwise, next time you turn the printer on, its address might have changed, and you won't be able to print!

After installing Tiger, I discovered that I could not print PDFs on my HP OfficeJet 6110 (although I was pleasantly surprised that Safari can now render them on screen). Whenever I tried to print a PDF (inside Safari or not), the printer would spit out the top half or so on one sheet, then a blank page, then a bit of the bottom half.

After a fair amount of poking around in the log, I fired up the CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) configuration tool by pointing my browser at "http://localhost:631/". From there I configured the printer as best I could guess (you need to enter an administrator's username and password to save any changes), and things began working normally.

Slow Printing, or not at all.

It turns out that if you throw away the Library/Printers folder BEFORE reinstalling the driver, everything is back to normal.

I have a Dual 1.25GHz mirrored door PowerMac G4. Under Panther, I could use the CHUD tools to put the processor in a nap mode, which kept the processor running substantially cooler. With Tiger, the CHUD tool won't allow me to select "Allow Nap".

update:
A new version of CHUD 4.2.2 is posted now. Adds support for more processors and restores "nap" feature.

ÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐÐ [Spotlight data is stored on a per-drive basis. Your data will be Spotlight indexed and searchable, with a slight caveat. It has been noted that Spotlight does not properly index an iPhoto Library stored on a non-boot disk; I have confirmed this on my desktop Mac. (I theorize that iPhoto Library *must* be in ~/Pictures/ for proper functioning of the iPhoto Spotlight importer.)

Spotlight privacy exclusions are also stored on a per-drive basis. I found that if I set them on a FireWire drive on one Mac, they were retained when hooked to another Mac. -MacInTouch]Enable Spotlight for disk images

By default in 10.4, Spotlight won't index the content of mounted disk images. If you're like me and keep your mail (and other sensitive documents) on an encrypted disk image, none of that content is searchable from Spotlight -- whether from the Finder or even in an application like Mail.app -- because all searching is done through Spotlight indexes.

To enable indexing on a read/write disk image, you can use 'mdutil' (meta data utility) from the Terminal.
Here's the command:

sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/name_of_image

After a few moments (depending on how much data is in the image), you'll find your mail in Spotlight results. You can also do a man mdutil to see the rest of its commands.
______________________________________________

SpotLight uses a database at the backend. If the database is corrupted and you want to rebuild it (or if you just want to force a rebuild), you can do so:

In SpotLight system preferences, go to the Privacy tab and drag and drop the volume you want to re-index into the table.

That will erase the index of that volume, as you've asked it to now be non-searchable. Just remove the volume from the table, and indexing will re-start and create a new database.

This can also be achieved in the Terminal by using the following command:

sudo mdutil -E /path/to/volume

For example, sudo mdutil -E / will erase the boot volume database. See man mdutil for more options.
-----------------
You can use the mdutil via the Terminal.app to turn Spotlight on or off for a given volume. To turn it off for your boot disk:

sudo mdutil -i off /

To turn it off for a mounted disk named FooBar:

sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/FooBar

It turns off any ongoing indexing immediately.

I recommend doing this for any attached FireWire drives that you use as clone targets, for instance, for backup processes.
----------------
Force update Spotlight Index

- I did a clean install of Tiger and then copied over my iTunes Music Library. The problem is, at least in my case, that Spotlight had already indexed my drive by the time I copied over my library. The solution, which should work for anyone, is to open the terminal and execute the mdimport command:

mdimport Music/

When run from your home dir, this will explicitly index your Music Library. I did the same with my Pictures dir. After doing this, I could search on all sorts of metadata on my photos and music.

After the initial indexing, whenever you update data and save, it gets added to the Spotlight database. Unfortunately, it seems copying files does not trigger a Spotlight update.

Anyhow, it's easy to run mdimport to explicitly update the database.

Lucius Kwok - In response to several people who could find only some things with Spotlight, note that Apple's search engine only searches the beginning of words, so if you search for "cat" it will match "catfish" but not "tomcat."

Here is what Allume (Stuffit) wrote about problems users face. And yes, developers are filling the lack of Stuffit support as a "bug" to Apple.

The Migration Assistant copied the StuffIt.framework successfully in my tests. However, the "Archive & Install" option does not copy the StuffIt.framework, leaving a crippled StuffIt Expander. We have a post on our forum suggestion users reinstall to correct this issue.

I can see this potentially driving new Mac users crazy!

Agreed!

Try this: in Safari's preferences, turn off the "Open 'safe' files automatically" option, then download a MacBinary encoded file (.bin) and see if you can do anything with it. You can't! There are no tools that come included in Tiger to deal with MacBinary, BinHex, StuffIt, StuffIt X, and other formats.

We just released a stand-alone StuffIt Expander installer for Tiger users to deal with that issue. It can be downloaded from several locations. Here are a few links:

Office 2004 and font corruption

MacFixIt reports an issue with Office 2004 and font corruption, apparently confirmed by Microsoft.

The issue can be worked around via the tedious process of uninstalling Microsoft Office 2004 before Mac OS X 10.4 installation, then re-installing the suite after updating is complete.

"When I first installed Mac OS X 10.4 and started Microsoft Word, Word reported that almost all the fonts were corrupted. Other programs, however, did not report that that these same fonts were corrupted. My system then became corrupt and crashed repeatedly.

I contacted Microsoft tech support, but they were unfamiliar with the problem. I erased my hard disk, copied my bootable backup onto it with 10.3.9 installed, and reinstalled 10.4. This resolved the issue.

A few days later Microsoft called back and said that they had confirmed the problem. They recommend that Microsoft Office be uninstalled before updating to OS 10.4 and then reinstalled since they claim this prevents the problem form occurring."

Microsoft Identifying Issues

Last week, Microsoft released a statement on the compatibility of its Mac products and Tiger. It said that it has worked closely with Apple to make sure Office 2004 for Mac, Microsoft's productivity suite, works with Tiger.

The company added that it is also collaborating with Apple to identify "potential issues" with its Virtual PC product, which allows Windows programs to run on a Mac.

Any issues with the program will be addressed in a free update to be released within the next two to three months, the statement said.

Someone had some problems and thought it might be their APC PowerChute startup item or something else.

Now, confirmation that those 3rd party items are causing problems for others:

Dual 2GHz G5 not shutting down after doing the Tiger upgrade.

NVRAM and Open Firmware resets did no good.
It has been of use in some situations though, and can't hurt and might help - a DVD drive that wasn't recognized in one case.

A search on the Apple Discussion web site revealed that 3rd party startup items were the culprit, with SpeedTools most often the offender.

Look in /library/startupitems (at the root drive level, not the user library) and remove the 3rd party items.

SpeedTools and QuickBackStartupItem have both been confirmed to break shutdown/restart. Remove these items, and then after the next boot both the shutdown and restart routines will work correctly.

SoftRAID today announced that its SoftRAID 3 driver is included with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger (both retail and CPU-installed versions).

The SoftRAID 3 driver allows Mac OS X to recognize SoftRAID volumes created with the SoftRAID 3. <a href=http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=2005041722220621>Tiger Server Mail.</a>
This is an area where a nice amount of progress has been made. Apple has really listened to its users and bundled in some very popular third party features to Mail. In fact I'd even go as far as to say that the mail module in Server Admin is the singularly most updated module in 10.4.

First and foremost is integrated virus scanning, provided by ClamAV. This is a feature that will be very popular with the OS X Server crowd, as it is a component that was almost a must have for all admins out there in charge of an OS X Mail Server. By default, your server will update its virus definition database once a day (FreshClam). You'll be best served to increase the amount of daily updates to a higher number, as the freshclam folks will suggest that your target be 8+ updates daily. Infected messages can be deleted, quarantined or bounced, depending on the policy you set in Server Admin. You are also able to receive alerts on receipt of infected messages on your server and notify your users as well.

The release will include updates for the NetBarrier X3 firewall, VirusBarrier X, Personal Backup X, ContentBarrier X for Internet filtering, ChatBarrier X3 for encrypted chats, Personal Antispam X3, and Remote Management Console for managing Intego programs on a network.

Sophos (http://www.sophos.com/pressoffice/pressrel/uk/20050428macosx104.html) released a Tiger-compatible version of their anti-virus software on April 29, the same day Tiger was released. It works great.

Sophos may be the best anti-virus software available for the Mac. Their software runs as a client app and the same software can be used to scan e-mail messages on a mail server (requires software to pass messages to it for scanning).

Ê Unfortunately, Sophos does not appear to be available for sale to individuals. They focus their efforts on business customers (small business, enterprise, education, etc).

APC PowerChute 1.3.3 (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/13132)
Tiger has support for most UPS units including APC.

What's new in this version:
Fixed some minor compatibility issues with the Xserve G5.
The following OS versions are currently supported:
Mac OS X v10.3.9 - 10.4.1
Mac OS X Server v10.3.9 - 10.4.1
-----------------------
Connected to an APC Smart UPS 1000XL, Tiger gives more power down options, for example when on UPS, shutdown in 1 to 15 minutes or as a percentage of power remaining. Time until full still comes up as "unknown", however, this is not really an issue as you can work on percentages (for shutdown or level of charge).
------------------------

Belkin UPS
F6H650-USB
No

Reader says, "Even with the Belkin Bulldog software uninstalled, just having the UPS plugged via USB in results in all USB devices being unrecognized and unusable until a hard reboot...."
------------------

With Tiger and USBOverdrive 10.3.8 installed, I was experiencing constant lockups (often just the mouse; sometimes the whole system, which required a Power Button reset). The lockups happened at random, sometimes seemingly from startup, sometimes a few minutes later.

I eventually traced it to some sort of conflict between my APC Back- UPS XS 1000 and USBOverdrive. I noticed that the UPS was showing up in USBOverdrive's "Handled Devices" popup, though it was greyed out.

After removing the UPS's USB connection or uninstalling USBOverdrive, the lockups stopped. They returned as soon as I enabled both again.

Seems like it is an internal modem issue and trying to use another modem init string doesn't work or help, either. Apparently Tiger is different. Anyone who used a modem 10-15 yrs ago often got handy with those modem init strings (different init for compuserve or GEnie etc often) in Zterm and other programs.

Most anyone with an internal modem, not just iBooks or laptops and iMacs but G5s even.

Going back to 10.3.x or 10.2.x and modem still, thankfully, works.

Most often with OS X systems, resetting Open Firmware's three basic commands help.
> reset-nvram
> set-defaults
> reset-all

(won't help, but useful to do sometimes)

Backup. Clone your system. Test that you can use it before plunging ahead.

Mac OS 10.4.3 Server Combo Update (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver1043combo.html), 130MB.
-------
What's new in this version:

Finder and Spotlight

* Improves responsiveness during Spotlight searches in the Finder.
* Spotlight comments entered in the Finder are now preserved when using iDisk syncing.
* Get Info windows correctly display non-Roman language versions and copyright strings.
* Improves the alert that appears when replacing an item during a copy when the capitalization of the items' names is the only difference.
* Permissions for items inside packages are now correctly set when applying permission changes to enclosed items in the Finder Info window.
* Items copied into a Drop Box have permissions set correctly.
* Addresses an issue in which Spotlight cannot find a file after using iPhoto to rename it if the filename originally contained an ampersand (&).
* The Spotlight image indexer now uses the "Software" TIFF property to support graphics rendering and image editing applications that use this property.

Safari, Internet, and networking

* Safari can now pass the "Acid2" test.
* Improves compatibility of Safari with many webcams.
* Improves the handling of Hebrew and Arabic text in Safari and Mail.
* Improves compatibility for OpenGL-accelerated Macromedia Shockwave 3D webpage content when using Safari.
* Addresses an issue in which an SMB volume might not mount again after it's unmounted.
* Addresses some issues in which the Finder might not be able to connect to an SMB volume.
* Bluetooth Setup Assistant now lets you toggle the Modem menu extra on or off (you can also use System Preferences).
* Resolves an issue in which Internet Connect wouldn't connect to a dial-up ISP if the account password contained a double-quote (") character.
* Improves compatibility with Squid proxy servers.

Syncing

* With this update, you no longer need to store Address Book contact URLs in the Notes field when syncing with .Mac.
* Mac sync error alerts now provide a better description of the issue (for more details about a .Mac sync error, see the dotmacsync.log file).
* Allows your Address Book contacts that are organized in subgroups to be synced to an iPod using iTunes.

Mail

* Addresses an issue in which Mail might prompt you to download items attached to an IMAP email message more than once.
* In the Fonts & Colors preferences in Mail, you can now customize the font used in the list of Mailbox names.
* Smart Mailboxes that use "Entire Message Contains" and another criteria with the "any" qualifier now work as expected.
* Smart Groups of addresses can now be dragged from Address Book to a message's To, Cc, or Bcc field.
* The number of messages in a Smart Mailbox are now displayed in the title bar.
* Pressing Tab while composing a Mail message now inserts a tab character, instead of four spaces.
* Accounts created in Mail after installing this update will avoid an issue in which .Mac mail could not be sent if the Internet Service Provider blocks port 25.
* Reduces the amount of blank lines Mail might insert into a message when forwarding or replying to it.
* Addresses an issue in which some Mail rules could be lost or duplicated after a .Mac sync.
* Addresses in the "To:", "Cc:", "Bcc:" fields, as well as the Accounts pop-up menu, no longer appear in red if the address is in a different lettercase than what is entered in the "Mark addresses not in the domain" field; for example, "Mac@MAC.Com" will no longer be marked in red if the "Mark addresses not in the domain" field contains "mac.com."
* Searches of "All Mailboxes" can now, optionally, include items from Junk and Trash.
* Resolves an issue in which meeting requests sent from Microsoft Outlook to an Exchange account in Mail might not appear.

iChat
* iChat preferences now allow you to display emoticons (such as a smiley face) as text (such as " :-) ") instead of as a graphic.
* Resolves an issue in Activity Monitor in which you might see "iChatAgent (Not Responding)" in red text, even though iChat works just fine.
* Addresses a "No data has been received for the last 10 seconds" alert that could often appear when participating in a video chat in iChat with someone using AIM on a PC.
* .Mac members can enable encrypted chat sessions after installing this update.
* Further addresses potential causes of persistent "insufficient bandwidth" alerts.

Other applications

* Disk Utility can verify the Mac OS X 10.4 startup volume with this update.
* Many improvements for Calculator are included, such as: A black triangle icon no longer appears below "Infinity." Calculator now filters out unusable characters when pasting from the Clipboard, certain "rounding error" issues are addressed, and other issues.
* Addresses an issue in which iCal could not publish or subscribe to a secure URL if your password contained a question mark (?).
* Addresses an issue in which Preview might only print the first page of a multipage TIFF document.
* Keychain Access searching is no longer case-sensitive after installing this update.
* This update allows Keychain Access to directly import .pkcs12 files.
* X11 windows no longer stay in the background after selecting the X11 application from the Dock or with Application Switcher.

Other

* Software Update now lets you know when only ignored (hidden) updates are available for installation.
* Addresses an issue in which incoming faxes are saved as "from unknown" PDF files.
* Addresses an issue in which some Traditional Chinese input methods, such as Pinyin, limit the number of candidate characters presented in the candidate window.
* Resolves an issue for Palm Desktop software in which the Command-Q keyboard shortcut would sometimes not quit the application unless it was pressed a second time.
* Improves compatibility with Microsoft IntelliPoint mouse modifier clicking; that is, mouse buttons configured to act as a Control-click or Command-click, for example.
* Improves window scrolling when dragging an item into a window that's viewed as a list, where not all of the list is visible.
* Improves compatibility with Microsoft Word and Excel 2004, addressing an issue in which the application could stop responding for several seconds.
* Addresses an issue in which cases and/or specific user conversion dictionaries could be disabled after upgrading to Tiger.
* Addresses performance issues affecting three AppleScript commands: do shell script, system info, and delay.
* The Core Data framework has been updated to improve relationship management issues, resolve issues with data migration, improve Undo and Redo commands, and improve insertion performance.
* Resolves a potential redraw issue in which an application window's scroll bars could appear in the wrong place.
* Allows Apple Wireless Keyboards to work in single-user mode.
* Addresses an issue in which high ASCII characters in a password could lead to a blue screen at startup, or prevent log in.
* MS-DOS-formatted volumes, including the iPod Shuffle, perform better and consistently mount (become available) in the Finder.
* Improves results when printing to an optional envelope feeder on some printers.
* Disables Quartz 2D Extreme—Quartz 2D Extreme is not a supported feature in Tiger, and re-enabling it may lead to video redraw issues or kernel panics.

* Includes previous standalone security updates.

One user thinks they found a bug in Tiger (client) on one of my older B&W G3 (G4 upgrade) machines that has SCSI hard drives with the 2940.
---------------
Others note problems with 2906 and 2930. The OEM 2940U2B that shipped with some B&W "server" models is probably broken, too, unless 10.4.1 addresses that in the "support for 3rd party devices," though unlikely.
Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) appears to have some serious issues with SCSI expansion cards and drives in some system configurations. In some cases, the presence of certain SCSI PCI cards can cause kernel panics, startup problems, and other issues.

Removing these cards (particularly some widely used SCSI expansion cards from Adaptec) has resolved issues for a number of readers.

Removing the following kernel extensions from the /System/Library/Extensions folder resolved issues with an Adaptec card:

Adaptec290X-2930.kext
Adaptec29160x.kext
Adaptec39160.kext
Adaptec78XXSCSI.kext

Tiger does work in B&W with 39160. Confirmation from two people that the 39160 and 29160N works.

On Apple's Discussion: "I did receive a response from Adaptec about my PowerDomain 29160N SCSI card and here it is:"
"Thank you for your inquiry.

Yes, the drivers are embedded in Tiger so it will work with that operating system."
"They were right, my SCSI hard drive and scanner are working perfectly."

- Good news for anyone who owns an Adaptec controller. And no need to bother with drivers. (I do have 1.3.0b1 but maybe I don't need to now.)

Report on Problems with Photoshop CS2 and Tiger Clean/Case-Sensitive Install - www.xlr8yourmmac.com
There are also reports on MacIntouch.
-------------------
When "copying" anything from Illustrator CS with the intent to "paste" into Photoshop CS I get a "Could not import the clipboard because the specified format is not in the edition." window.

I upgraded to Tiger from Panther using the "Archive & Install" option. I did do a complete reinstall of the Adobe Creative Suite after I first ran into this issue but it didn't seem to fix anything.

"Check your preferences in Illustrator and make sure the clipboard is set to AICB. Preference> Files & Clipboard. Under Clipboard, check the Copy As AICB box." And do an Upgrade-in-place.

AdobeAdobe issued the following statement via e-mail to MacNewsWorld.

"We've been working closely with Apple to ensure that Adobe products, including our just-announced Adobe Creative Suite 2, remain compatible with Apple's latest operating system, Mac OS X Tiger. We believe Tiger looks like a strong release. We look forward to exploring the ways that Mac OS X Tiger can showcase Adobe's continued innovation on the Mac."
On two computers since my Tiger upgrade I can no longer drag graphics files on top of Photoshop's Dock icon to open them, in fact double clicking .psd files in the Finder doesn't work either. Both of these methods open Photoshop but not the data file. The only way I can get Photoshop CS to open the file is via the File Open menu directly in Photoshop.
Has anyone else experienced this?
------------------
"Adobe Premiere v6.5 doesn't completely work in Tiger. It's possibly due to Quicktime v7. You can edit video but you can't capture video or export the timeline (movie, frame, or audio). I would suggest people working in 10.3.9 or older versions to avoid updating to Quicktime v7 if they need to use Premiere."

Issue connecting to SMB (Samba) shares under Mac OS X 10.4 -- usually resultant in error -36.

Changing a line in the smb.conf (configuration) file to be uncommented resolves the issue in his case.

"... Tiger is sending encrypted passwords.
If Samba isn't configured to receive them, Tiger can't log in."

In smb.conf, the line:

encrypt passwords = yes

must be uncommented (make sure there is not a ";" at the beginning of the line).

The smb.conf file is located at /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf.

You can access the smb.conf file in the terminal via the command:

sudo vi /etc/smb.conf

which will open smb.conf in the text editing utility "vi"

From that article on eWeek: Much of the incompatibility is due to new kernel programming interfaces being introduced with Tiger and dropping of support for many developers' network kernel extensions. However, other developers say that in addition to these changes, there are bugs that Apple will have to fix before they can make changes to their software.

"There were so many changes in the OS that we couldn't get to testing until the past 30 days," he said. "I can't really blame Apple for not immediately recognizing [the bugs]. I'm sure they'll fix it in the short term."

Thursby also thinks users will benefit in the long run.

"There are a lot of changes that aren't apparent to the general users. Obviously this is in preparation for future enhancements."

Alcatel Speedtouch DSL modem

Two reports of incompatibility; two of it working. One reader forwarded a reply from SpeedTouch:
"An updated driver is in development, release date to be confirmed. In the short term, switch to an Ethernet modem/router (speedTouch 510E) or revert to Panther."

I did read that "Apple is aware of... and was already working on 10.4.1 to address those issues (bugs)" rather than hold up 10.4.0 (which like 10.3.0 was needed for new Macs). But this is how Apple got its reputation. Never about what those bugs might be. Now we are beginning to see.

Okay, I can accept that. But not if you can't download the 10.4.1 update, come on guys!

cron still exists but it's been delegated to second fiddle. launchd is a similar utility that now runs the periodic maintenance tasks that used to be run from cron. For several reasons, such as those noted in the arstechnica article Hal referenced, launchd is arguably superior to cron.

I am admittedly not an expert with the finer workings of cron but I note that the crontab in Tiger is now an empty file with just notations about launchd and is missing the information required to direct cron to the appropriate working directories.

One reason why there are separate maintenance utilities.

Mail issues: Tiger Cache Cleaner seems to do a better job here than Cocktail. TCC immediately corrected the problem while Cocktail failed to correct the problem and caused me to rule out this solution the first time around, resulting in a few hours of fruitless troubleshooting to clean up corrupt cache files and folders.

I suspect Spell Catcher here as being a possible source of the conflict but have yet to recreate the symptoms again...and really don't care to ...having a working Mail app is crucial to my existence.

If you have a copy of the 10.3.9 install left from the Tiger archive & install do this:

sudo kextload /Previous\ Systems.localized/Previous\ System\ 1/System/Library/Extensions/IOSerialFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/InternalUSBModem.kext/

(that's all supposed to be one line)

Hopefully, your previously dead modem will now magically work.

The info.plist for InternalUSBModem.kext is missing some stuff that was in the last one, dunno if that has any effect. I added 'em in to my 10.4.1 edition, we'll see.

Most IT departments don't deploy a new OS for months, wait for at least one or two service packs (W2K) or for new computers to come with the system pre-installed. Yes sir.

We are still getting up to speed with 10.3 here in IT, although having remote users all over the place is a real hurdle for us... Really starting to get 10.3 dialed in and tweaked, so we won't even consider moving users to 10.4 for several months...probably next fall/winter at the soonest.

Partly to get a couple OS updates out of Apple, partly to let all the apps/developers work their bugs out, and partly for us to get up to speed with all the admin tweaks and tools. :D

Looks like the OS sometimes interprets a ".0" at the end of an application's name (such as "Adobe Photoshop 7.0") as an unknown document extension, turning the application into a document - even though you can still view it's packages contents and launch the app from within there....

After getting info on the Photoshop app, it appeared that it did not have the requisite .app extension - the .0 in "7.0" was acting as the extension! Tacking on .app in the Finder did no good, instead resulting in Photoshop being named "...shop 7.0.app0".

I got info on Photoshop, removed the .0, replaced it with .app, and now it seems fine. Although, if I then try and restore the .0 either in the Finder or in the Info window, it reverts back to identifying as a document! VERY odd.

The definite fix though is to remove any trailing ".x" in the app's name and add .app in the Info window.

Something in Tiger removes the ".app" suffixes from some applications' filenames, which causes Finder to regard them as documents instead of apps.

Instead of resetting their "Open With" settings (which creates weird doc/apps that open themselves with themselves), just re-append ".app" to their filenames to turn them back into apps. - MacInTouch

Quartz 2D Extreme in Tiger: How to turn it on!

If you've read John Siracusa's extensive review on Tiger, you might have seen the part about Quartz 2D Extreme being turned off by default.

It certainly helps taking a load off the CPU for the GUI, so you might want to turn it on to test it for a while.

To turn it on, simply install the developer tools that come on the Tiger installation DVD. In "/Developer/Applications/Performance Tools" you'll find "Quartz Debug.app". In one of its menus, you can turn the feature on.

However, it's turned off again as soon as you quit the app. Force-quit it, however (using Cmd-Opt-Esc or the Activity Monitor), and the feature stays turned on even through reboots.

Tiger version 1.4 for AppleJack.
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

Allows you to easily run maintenance tasks from Single User Mode on startup.

Product Description:

AppleJack is a tool to make it easy to troubleshoot your Mac when no other startup disk is available to you. The script gives you an interactive menu-driven environment for basic disk check/repair, permissions repair, .plist validation, cache cleanup, and swap file removal. You can do basic system maintenance even if your GUI won't start up at all, simply by booting into single user mode, and typing 'applejack'.

New version of AppleJack fixes a serious bug that could affect File Vault users. AppleJack 1.3.2 also performs all file deletions much more securely. The new version leaves the LaunchServices preferences db and cached User Pictures alone by default. You can remove them by using AppleJack in AUTO mode rather than auto mode.

What's New:
Version 1.4:

* Enabled support for Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger).
* Changed AppleJack to allow for checking multiple user's preference files or caches without having to relaunch the routine.
* Improved the display of user directories for machines with many users.
* Fixed a few errors in the man page and the ReadMe file.

AppleJack 1.4.1 Update (OS X repair/troubleshooting tool) - There's a 1.4.1 update listed at MU today (v1.4.0 from 5/6 added tiger support)

Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.2 or later, including 10.4.

I installed 10.4.1 last night and currently am using a SIIG ATA/IDE card (SC-MP4A12), hardware version 1. This is a rebranded AcardÊAEC-6280M.

I have two HDDs attached to this card, and both seem to work fine. I have not, however, tried to boot from this bus yet (I'm currently booting from the onboard IDE). Before installing 10.4.1, I visited SIIG's site to make sure I had current firmware. They listed 2.14 as the newest firmware, which I downloaded and flashed to the card (the flasher utility only seems to work in OS 9, as the card was not recognized by the utility under Classic).

Now, I see that Acard, which actually makes this card, is offering a firmware update to version 2.16 (posted just last month). I've written to SIIG to ask if I should install that version, but since my card is working under 10.4.1 while others' cards aren't, maybe I lucked out by flashing to version 2.14.

Those with problems using SIIG/Acard host controllers under 10.4.1 might consider using the flasher at SIIG's site for version 2.14.
--------------------
Update: the problem booting Tiger off my SIIG ATA card had nothing to do with the configuration. It seems that my main boot drive was hopelessly corrupted. When I say hopelessly, I mean it--not even DiskWarrior could do anything with it. After backing it up and reformatting, Tiger boots from the SIIG card and has been working brilliantly (fingers crossed).
---------------------
I have had a reply from Highpoint Tech re there Raid card 1280A which was made for the Mac will not work with Tiger 10.4.1.

Highpoint say there are going to work on the problem but do not know when they will have an answer.

A new feature in HFS+, Access Control Lists (ACLs)
for fine-grained control and POSIX.2 support

HFS+ has been missing fine-grained access control to files and folders. It was possible to work around this by making large numbers of groups and assigning people to many different groups.

In 10.4, we now have proper access lists on files and folders, meaning that we can now allow/deny access to multiple, individual users, rather than just the old Unix-style User, Group and Other.

At the moment, there is no GUI for it on OS X Client.

The chmod, chown, chgrp, etc. commands, accessed via Terminal, are the only way at the moment to configure ACLs on OS X Client.

In the past, these commands have used the User, Group and Other syntax, but now they have been expanded with POSIX.2 support.

You can view the ACLs on a file/folder using ls -le.
Any files that have an ACL will be listed with the full ACL.

Mail: Upgrade and Importing old mail
Earlier versions of Mail 10.3 and below used a single file for each Mailbox you created, so if you created a mailbox called "Email from Mom" you would get a .mbox file called "Email from Mom.mbox" Now if you went and added a mailbox inside of the "Email from Mom" mailbox called "Party"a folder would be created in the file system called "Email from Mom" with a "Party.mbox" file inside it. So for each mailbox you have a mbox file and for each nested mailbox there is a mbox file a folder and the contained mbox files. Things get interesting if you went and deleted "Email from Mom" the mailbox turns white since it first deletes the "Email from Mom.mbox" file but keeps the "Email from Mom" folder. Deleting the white mailbox and you are asked if you want to delete it and all contained mailboxes.

Enter Tiger...
Tiger now stores each and every piece of email as a single file called .elmx. This is because Spotlight is designed to search files on a per-file basis and not search inside of large database like files (like a mbox file) so they had to convet the way Mail stored its mail. When you first open Tiger mail it should convert all those mbox files into the single files.
--------------------
Here's the way you should migrate your mail.

BEFORE doing anything, rename your mail folder (~/Library/Mail).

Install 10.4

Fire up mail, make sure everything is okay (and that you don't see the old mail, and no import/upgrade took place).

MANUALLY import the old mail from within mail. Let it chug away.

Works fine. It seems the auto-import/upgrade has issues.
--------------------
After a clean install, open up Mail.app and set up your accounts.

File > mport and choose Mail for Mac OS X to import from.
Locate the folder on your external hard drive where your previous mail messages are and import.
This imported all my previous archive email boxes no problem and placed them in a folder titled "Import" in the sidebar.
However, if you rename this folder, all the messages disappear.
Also, without renaming the folder, all messages disappeared for me randomly after about 4 days.
-----------------
I did the same thing - when Mail asked me where my old mail folders were on the first run, I let it know, expecting my messages to be there. But nothing except empty folders!

Then, after re-starting Mail, I did the import from Mail's File menu (Import Mailboxes), and everything worked peachy-keen!
-----------------
workaround: let mail do an import again. select "Other". now mail looks for a generic .mbox. now point to your .mbox file and it will be imported. but only one after another. so with complex folder structures it is a hellish work...
-----------------
Mail connecting to a mail SMTP server over SSL does not work.. same settings under Panther worked fine. POP over SSL works fine. (ISP compatibility with their SSL layer?)
-----------------
Create a new email, then click the CC or BCC area, click on the address book, when clicking on names you want in the CC or BCC area they will always go to the TO area. 10.3 didn't do this.

About Java 2 Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 1 for Tiger

support for cross-platform J2SE 5.0 applications and J2SE 5.0-based applets in Safari on Mac OS X 10.4 "Tiger."

This update does not change the default version of Java on your Mac from Java 1.4.2 to J2SE 5.0, though Java applications that require J2SE 5.0 may specifically request it. If you want to change the default Java version for applications and applets, use the new Java Preferences utility that is installed by the J2SE 5.0 update at /Applications/Utilities/Java/J2SE 5.0/.

http://developer.apple.com/referencelibrary/Java/
http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/docs/api/index.html

Javascript
Start by visiting the Java plug-in site.
Download the latest available package by clicking on the file name below the Latest File Releases header. A new Web page will appear. Click on the first entry (javaplugin) in the Latest File Releases list. As of this writing, the file is called JavaEmbeddingPlugin0.9.0.zip.

The Java Embedding Plugin allows other web browsers than Apple's Safari to use the most recent versions of Java (1.4.X) on Mac OS X.

http://javaplugin.sourceforge.net/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/javaplugin/

After the download completes, quit your Mozilla-based browser and open the JavaEmbeddingPlugin folder. Open the Binaries folder inside, and then drag and drop the two files located there (JavaEmbeddingPlugin.bundle and MRJPlugin.plugin) into your Mac’s top-level Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder. You may have to create this folder if you haven’t installed Internet plug-ins before.

Before you can use the plug-in, you need to check one last thing. Its functionality depends on the order in which your plug-ins load:

the MJRPlugin.plugin file must load before two Apple-provided files, Java Applet.plugin and Java Applet Plugin Enabler. To ensure that this is the case, view the Plug-Ins folder by date (choose View: As List, then click once on the Date Modified column header to order the files from newest to oldest). If MRJPlugin.plugin is listed above the other two files, you’re home free.

In Terminal, type
touch "/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/MRJPlugin .plugin" and press return.

You’ve just changed the plug-in’s date stamp to the present date and time; it will now appear at the top of the list in the Finder. Launch your Mozilla-based browser again and load the physics site mentioned earlier. You’ll find that the applets now all work as expected.

Developer demos 'exploit' in Tiger's DashboardOne developer claims to have found a security hole in Apple's new Tiger operating system. According to his website, Apple's highly touted Dashboard technology, found in the new version of Mac OS X 10.4, has a security vulnerability that could cause malicious third-party sites to auto-install a Widget, a small program designed to display Internet content on the desktop.

"If you're running Safari on OS X Tiger and go to this website, a 'slightly evil' Dashboard widget will be automatically downloaded and installed and can't be removed without manually removing the file from the Library folder and rebooting the computer."

The author says it is a demonstration "how easy it is to exploit Dashboard for nefarious purposes." A subsequent discussion by the author outlines other "more evil" exploits of the security hole.

Warning: the site will auto-install the 'zaptastic' widget and will require manual removal.

You cannot get rid of zaptastic_evil without deleting it from ~/Library/Widgets/ and rebooting your computer. You cannot use your Dashboard until you delete it from ~/Library/Widgets/ and reboot your computer. Write that down if you're not clear on the concept, on a piece of paper, not a Dashboard sticky, because you won't be able to read it once you've installed this. Because Apple didn't actually give you a way to relaunch Dashboard without a reboot, though I suppose you could just kill the process. Certainly there is no user documentation for that.

When the GreenZap Widget is downloaded, there are two very easy ways to delete it without rebooting:

1. In terminal, type "kill zaptastic_evil\ DashboardClient"
2. Use Activity Monitor to force the offending widget to quit.
http://stephan.com/widgets/zaptastic/

Note: starting in 10.4.1, the user will be prompted before any widget download.

Widget Manager 1.0 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17990) PreferncePane
http://www.downtownsoftwarehouse.com/WidgetManager/index.php

According to Apple, you cannot remove widgets from the Widget Bar or change their order. There is no way to remove widgets from the GUI, but you can do it in Terminal.app.

Launch Terminal and type (the $ is the prompt, and the line below is just a comment to explain the command):

$ cd /Library/Widgets/
/* to move to the widget directory */

$ ls
/* list the installed widgets */

$ rm widget_name.wdgt
/* remove the named widget */

Basically, if you create a sparse image in Tiger and back up to it, everything is fine. You can unmount it, and the file size is as you'd expect.

Ê If, however, the image is larger than about 1GB and you try to mount it, Tiger will destroy it, and set its size to 1008MB.

Ê I cannot recommend that you rely on any application, including SuperDuper!, that uses images until this Tiger bug is fixed. Please, be careful -- and tell others to be careful too!

[Uwe Kempf] I'm experiencing serious problems with Tiger and Sparse Images:

Ê Ê - Create a new Sparse Image with AES128
Ê Ê - When it's finished, copy some JPGs onto it
Ê Ê - Eject the image volume
Ê Ê - Re-mount it
Ê Ê - All JPGs are broken

I could reproduce it on three machines (German Version of Tiger 8A428)
[Follow-up] I found a workaround for this problem:

Ê Ê - Create a new Sparse Image with AES128
Ê Ê - When it's finished, first UNMOUNT IT
Ê Ê - Re-mount it
Ê Ê - Then start to use it...

Don't use the image directly when it is automatically mounted after creation. First unmount it and remount it.

I installed Tiger on Beige G3, Upgrade style. No problem at all using XPF 4.0b2. I cloned my system so I still have a backup for now. Tiger runs better - much better - than Jaguar did, which is what I was using (less trouble). I don't even have OS 9 installed (sometimes I have had to boot from OS 9 CD though).

My advice: Go for it!

News about installing Tiger on OldWorld and some NewWorld Macs, including FireWire booting OS X on the B&W. I expect to get an initial version of XPF 4 out the door reasonably soon -- there are a few glitches I'd like to test a little first.

There are mainly two problems remaining:

The Mac OS X Installer has always enforced an 8 GB limit on "Old World" machines when installing onto an ATA drive. The Installer has always been a bit brain-dead about this -- the underlying problem only affects the built-in ATA hardware, but the Installer enforces the 8 GB limit on PCI cards as well. In Tiger, the Installer seems even more brain-dead -- it thinks all volumes are ATA volumes, and it thinks that they all go past 8 GB (even if they don't).

What's New

Version 4.0b2 fixes a problem with BootX that led to "Waiting for root device ..." messages after a successful Tiger install.

Here's what is new in version 4.0b1:

Tiger support!

XPostFacto now works with "New World" machines as well as "Old World" machines. This is particularly useful for use with the original iBooks, the original iMacs, and the Lombard Powerbooks, because Apple has dropped support for those models in Mac OS X 10.4. It is also useful with the Blue & White G3's, as it enables Firewire booting on that model (with the use of a "helper" drive).

The Mac OS X Installer will no longer complain about the 8 GB limit. (It used to complain about the 8 GB limit even in cases in which it wasn't really a problem). The downside is that there are some cases where the 8 GB limit really is a problem -- XPostFacto will attempt to warn you of those cases, but it may not catch all of them.

XPostFacto avoids the Installer's overzealous application of the 8 GB limit by pretending to be a "New World" machine. This has a side-effect on the way in which Mac OS X reads and writes NVRAM, but XPostFacto installs a kernel extension which translates between "Old World" and "New World" NVRAM structures. There may be other side-effects that I'm not aware of.

The XPostFacto user interface will now allow you to select a specific Mac OS 9.x volume to boot from. On "New World" machines, this actually works -- on "Old World" machines you will boot from one of the Mac OS 9.x volumes, but not necessarily the one you select.

shortening the Computer Name (to less than 6 characters) in the Sharing pane of System Preferences can resolve issues with D-Link routers, as well as with AirPort access.

... resolves an underlying DHCP issue that affects D-Link routers and some AirPort configurations.

started getting DHCP addresses again.

Go into the sharing preference pane and changing the computers name to a single word (I have kept it less than 6 characters, but I have no idea what the limit is) and closing the pref pane.

DHCP will start to work immediately - either hard-wire or wireless.
Don't even have to reboot.

Appears that most implementations of DHCP have a limit on the number of characters (or words - not sure which) in the host name.

The real problem of course, is with computers that have been set up with a long computer name because when you set up your Mac, the default is simply your name as typed in your log on, with "'s computer" added at the end.

It appears that Tiger issues the DHCP request with a host name, which Panther did not.

It affects some machines consistently, and some not at all.

this seems to fix the issue across the board - WAPs - DSL modems - Routers - you name it. Solved at least 12 customers' problems today with this.

Apple warns about Tiger compatible disk utilities.
Apple has a critical warning about the possibility of data loss using pre-Tiger utilities with the new operating system:

To avoid issues with a Mac OS X 10.4 volume, do not use disk utility software that was released before Tiger (late April, 2005) with it. If you do, the software might report false errors or attempt "repairs" that could lead to data loss.

Third-party disk utility software includes Alsoft DiskWarrior, Micromat Tech Tool, and Symantec Norton Disk Doctor. Consult third-party utility manufacturers to find out which software versions are compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.

A RAID created in Tiger cannot be mounted or seen by 10.3.9 Disk Utility or 3rd party utility. You must be running 10.4.1.

Mac OS X 10.4 adds support for Extended Attributes. A disk repair application that's not Mac OS X 10.4-aware may incorrectly report Extended Attributes as directory damage. You may get a (false) error message such as "Cannot be rebuilt. The original directory is too severely damaged." That is untrue. #301269 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269)

Roxio released a Toast Titanium 6.1 updater (http://www.roxio.com/en/support/toast/software_updatesv6.jhtml) for its CD/DVD burning software. This release includes all previous Version 6 updates and provides fixes for Tiger, correct DL recording for data disc formats, an update of the Deja Vu Backup Scheduler for Tiger, and more.

ææ The company also released a Jam 6.0.3 updater (http://www.roxio.com/en/support/jam/software_updatesv6.jhtml) for its audio tools. The update resolves an issue with Tiger and fixes two other bugs. It also includes the following statement:

"Following discussions with Apple, this version will no longer allow customers to create audio CDs or export audio to their hard drive using purchased iTunes music store content."

It's worth noting that Apple explicitly allows purchased music to be burned to CD, albeit with restrictions. If there is a technical reason for this change, it's not readily apparent. Personally, I consider these kinds of restrictions anathema for software that should let me burn whatever I want.

RAIDs created by Tiger Disk Utility don't show as a RAID when booted in 10.3.9. So not only did Disk Warrior 3.03 not show the RAID, neither did Apple Disk Utility.

Apple posted an article, "Only use Disk Utility from 10.3.9, or 3rd party utilities which were updated for 10.4.x" but no mention of this little gem.
Article 301269 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301269)

Disk Utility 10.5 Help.

Creating a RAID set Disk Utility RAID Options (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh1013.html)

RAID sets created in 10.4.1 Disk Utility:

RAID sets created in 10.4.1 Disk Utility are noot "backward compatible."
Cannot be 'seen' as a RAID by 10.3.9 Disk Utility.

When booting with the Option key held down during startup, bootable RAID shows as "volname 1" and "volname 2".

Previously, the RAID shows up in Option as bootable and as one volume.
Also, booted from 10.3.9 the volume was seen by the older Disk Utility.

After recreating the RAID in Tiger, I have those two issues. I was hoping to help someone who said that Disk Warrior 3.03 would not repair their RAID that they had built in Tiger 10.4 and then 10.4.1.

Tiger RAIDs are not "backward compatible" with 10.3.9. SoftRAID 3.1.3 is.

Also, copying using 32K block size was very very slow compared to whatever Panther RAID used. Using 64K seemed to bring it back to same performance, time taken to copy 5GB of files. And because it is the boot volume, it is a mix of file sizes and would have "assumed" 32k provided optimum performance.

The RAID is two Atlas 15K 18GB drives using latest ATTO drivers, UL3D, G4 MDD 1.25DP with 1.8GB RAM.

Disk Warrior 3.03 seems to take longer than normal on RAID created with SoftRAID 3.20 and if you do run it, it may hang on Step 8, and rather than force quit, try using Activity Monitor to see what is running, and there may be other background tasks owned by Disk Warrior, that continue to run even after quitting the application. That can result in the system not doing a clean shutdown or other problems.

10.4.3 adds native Dual Layer iDVD 5 Project support w/DVR-109 - I'd heard rumors that 10.4.3 would add native iDVD 5.0.1 Dual Layer (8GB) Project support for Pioneer DVR-109 drives (even those w/o apple firmware)

Apple sprouts new seed of Mac OS X 10.4.9

By AppleInsider Staff
Published: 12:00 PM EST
You may have missed it with all the news coming out of last week's Macworld Expo, but Apple, Inc. recently distributed a new pre-released build of Mac OS X 10.4.9 to its developer community.

The latest is just the second build of the Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system update to make its way outside the company's walls since build 8P2111 was released to developers in late December.

According to people familiar with the new seeding, the build is labeled Mac OS X 10.4.9 build 8P2117 and weighs in at 176.2 MB and 82 MB for Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs, respectively.

Since build 8P2111, which included numerous fixes for wireless and sync technologies, Apple has reportedly shifted the focus of Mac OS X 10.4.9 to some lower-level technology improvements.

With the latest seed, Apple has reportedly asked that developers focus their testing efforts on Activity Monitor, bash, bind, iCal, OpenSSH, Rosetta and sudo, in addition to those system components listed in the December seeding.

Those familiar with the new seed say it includes nearly two dozen bug fixes over build 8P2111, the majority of which focus on underlying system technologies such as CoreData, CUPS, CFNetwork, Kerberos, Open SSH, SMB File Server, IOkit kernel, Unix commands and WebCore.

Some of the more notable fixes target issues that may arise in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger when, connecting a system to display while in Sleep mode, the .m4v file extension is not recognized, synching data to Address Book with Sync Services, and printing with SMB home directory from Rosetta applications.

Mac OS X 10.4.9 will also reportedly address glitches that have turned up within file systems when users copy read-only files.

Apple Computer is asking its developer community to begin testing and providing feedback on a forthcoming update to its Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system.

People familiar with the matter say the Cupertino, Calif.-based company on thursday evening began distributing the first external software compile of Mac OS X 10.4.9 to members of its Apple Developer Connection.

Those people say the maintenance and security release was made available in two distinct distributions -- a bare-bones "Delta" updater and a more inclusive "Combo" version.

Apple reportedly asked developers to focus their testing efforts on system components such as .Mac connectivity, Bluetooth, Bonjour, FireWire, Graphics and USB.

Other areas of testing singled out by the Mac maker included Adobe Flash, Automator, Dashboard Widgets, Fonts, iChat video conferencing and iSync.

Already, the build distributed to developers includes over a dozen fixes to problems that have turned up in previous versions of the Tiger operating system, people familiar with the software say.

Some of the bugs Tiger users can expect solutions for in the upcoming release pertained to Rosetta, USB Modem and caller ID, the Universal Access preferences pane, Bluetooth and device pairing, QC Engine, and CoreGraphics and HID Manager.

Mac OS X 10.4.9 is also said to focus heavily on enhancements to various synching technologies, bundling fixes for Mac and syncing, Sync Services Engine, Sync Services and .Mac Sync, and rsync and extended attributes.

Always boot Mac OS X in Verbose Mode

http://osxdaily.com/images/macosx.jpg Booting Mac OS X is attractive and all, but some users would prefer to see what’s going on behind the scenes. Verbose mode shows you what is really happening during system startup, and is great for troubleshooting.

Typically if you wanted to boot in verbose mode you would hit Command-V during startup, which brings up the familiar white on black console. If you’d prefer to always see the system messages on boot, you can adjust the firmware from the Terminal with the nvram command.

To turn on Verbose booting, at the Terminal type the following:

<code>sudo nvram boot-args="-v"</code>
<code>
</code>
Disabling Verbose booting is just as easy:
<code>sudo nvram boot-args=</code>
<code>
</code>
If you’re curious what the current firmware nvram settings are, type the following:
<code>nvram -p</code>
